This guide is for iPhone users in mainland China who already have Shadowrocket and their own connection details. It explains how to check whether ChatGPT is currently available for your location and account, make a controlled connection test in Shadowrocket, and then troubleshoot loading or sign-in problems. A working connection does not guarantee that ChatGPT is available, that an account is eligible, or that any particular access method complies with current local requirements or OpenAI policies. Check those conditions before you begin.
Check availability and account requirements first
Start with the service’s current requirements, not with changes to your iPhone. OpenAI’s supported-countries information and policies can change, and availability can depend on the user’s location and circumstances. Check the latest information on the OpenAI Help Center and review the OpenAI Terms of Use. Do not assume that a successful network test makes a service available or resolves an account-eligibility issue. Follow applicable local requirements and the service’s current policies.
Also check how you intend to use ChatGPT. If you plan to install the iPhone app, search for ChatGPT in the App Store associated with your own Apple Account and verify that the listing is the official app published by OpenAI. The listing may not be available in every storefront. If you already have the app, make sure it is the official listing and update it through the App Store when an update is offered. You can also try the official ChatGPT website in Safari, subject to the same current availability and account requirements.
- Availability: Review OpenAI’s current supported-location information rather than relying on old posts or screenshots.
- Account: Use an account and sign-in method you control. If you created the account with a particular sign-in option, use that same option when prompted.
- App listing: Check the publisher and app details in the App Store. Do not assume an app with a similar name is official.
- Privacy: Do not share passwords, verification codes, subscription URLs, or server credentials when asking for help.
If ChatGPT is not available for your location or account under the current rules, changing Shadowrocket settings is not a substitute for meeting those requirements. If availability is unclear, pause and check OpenAI’s current guidance before troubleshooting the connection.
Prepare Shadowrocket without changing several settings at once
Before connecting, confirm that your existing server or subscription is present in Shadowrocket’s Home list. This guide assumes that you already have your own valid connection details; it does not provide or recommend a server, subscription, or service. If you have only a subscription URL, keep it private. A URL can contain access information, so do not paste it into public posts or screenshots.
Check the selected entry and its status in Home. If you use Config for rule-based routing, note which configuration is selected and avoid replacing it just to test one app. The options shown in Shadowrocket can vary according to the entry and the current app interface. Use values supplied with your own configuration; do not guess a protocol, port, TLS field, or routing rule based on a generic example.
Before the test
- Server entry
- Select an entry already in Home
- Connection
- Check the status shown in Shadowrocket
- Configuration
- Note the current Config and Global Routing mode
Keep a record of the starting setup so you can restore it after a temporary test.
For a controlled check
- Temporary mode
- Global Routing → Proxy, if available
- Rule-based mode
- Global Routing → Config
- Restore
- Return to your previous routing choice
Proxy is a troubleshooting comparison, not a recommendation for permanent routing.
Use Global Routing → Proxy only as a short, controlled test if that option appears in your app. In this mode, traffic is routed differently from Config, so it can help distinguish a possible rule-matching issue from a basic connection issue. It does not prove that ChatGPT is available, and it should not be left selected by accident. If you rely on Config for your normal routing, record that choice and restore it when the test is over.
For more help with the initial app workflow, see the Shadowrocket quick start. Follow the interface currently shown on your iPhone; labels and available choices can vary with the app version and configuration.
Test Shadowrocket and ChatGPT in a clear sequence
Make one change at a time. First confirm that the iPhone has a working internet connection on its current Wi-Fi or cellular network. Then connect through the entry you selected in Shadowrocket and wait for the app to show its connection status. If iOS asks to add or authorize a VPN configuration, read the system prompt and proceed only if you understand and intend to use that configuration. A VPN indicator by itself does not confirm that requests to every service are succeeding.
Record the starting mode
Open Shadowrocket → Home. Note the selected entry and current Global Routing choice. If you use Config, keep track of which configuration is selected before testing.
Connect once
Select your existing entry and turn on the connection. Allow the iOS permission prompt if it appears and you intend to connect. Wait for the status in Home to settle instead of repeatedly toggling the switch.
Check a separate page
In Safari, open a page you normally use to confirm that general browsing works. You can also check OpenAI’s public status page at status.openai.com. A status page loading does not confirm ChatGPT availability, but it can help separate a broad connection problem from an app-specific one.
Test ChatGPT
Open the official ChatGPT app from the App Store listing you verified, or visit the official ChatGPT website in Safari. Try one simple request after the page or app has fully loaded. Note the exact message and whether the failure occurs before or after sign-in.
Restore your mode
If you temporarily changed Global Routing to Proxy, return to the routing choice you recorded, such as Config. Confirm the selected entry and connection state again before continuing normal use.
Do not run many simultaneous tests that change the network, selected server, routing mode, and account session all at once. If the result changes, you need to know which action mattered. A short record is enough: the network type, Shadowrocket status, Global Routing mode, whether Safari loaded a page, and the exact ChatGPT error. Avoid recording or sharing passwords, tokens, or full subscription links.
Interpret the result before editing rules
If Safari cannot load ordinary pages while Shadowrocket is connected, investigate the general connection first. Check whether the selected entry is the one you intended to use, whether the connection status changes, and whether the same page loads after disconnecting. Do not infer that a particular ChatGPT domain or single rule is the cause from one failed attempt. A modern service may rely on multiple web requests, and a partially loaded page can have a different cause from a connection that never starts.
If ordinary browsing works in Proxy mode but ChatGPT fails in Config mode, the difference is useful evidence that routing or rule matching may be involved. It is not proof that one specific rule is missing. Review the configuration you already use and its update information, or ask the person or service that supplied your configuration to clarify how it handles the relevant traffic. Avoid adding guessed domains or copying an unverified rule list: an incomplete or overly broad rule can change the behavior of other apps as well.
If ChatGPT loads in both modes but sign-in fails, focus next on the account and sign-in flow rather than changing server fields. Make sure the iPhone’s date and time are set automatically in iOS Settings, then close and reopen the official app or reload the official website. Complete verification only through the expected official sign-in page. Never send a one-time code to someone offering to “fix” the connection.
Use the mode comparison as a diagnostic, not a permanent fix
If a short Proxy test works while Config does not, restore your normal routing and investigate the existing configuration before editing it. If both modes fail in the same way, changing rules repeatedly is unlikely to identify whether the cause is availability, account eligibility, an outage, or the connection itself.
When reporting a problem, include non-sensitive observations: the iPhone network type, whether Shadowrocket shows connected, the Global Routing mode tested, the time of the attempt, and the exact error wording. Do not include account identifiers, authentication codes, or connection credentials. This makes it easier to seek help without exposing access information.
Troubleshoot loading, sign-in, and verification problems
Use the symptom to choose the next check. “The app does not open,” “the page keeps loading,” and “sign-in is rejected” are different failure points. First make sure you are using the official app or website, then check OpenAI’s status information and current account requirements. If the service reports an outage, repeated changes to Shadowrocket are unlikely to help; wait for the status to change and try again later.
- App not listed in your App Store: Confirm that you are checking the official ChatGPT listing in your own storefront. Availability can differ by storefront and can change. Do not treat a connection setting as a way to change app-store availability.
- Blank screen or endless loading: Test a normal Safari page, then compare ChatGPT in the app with the official website if both are available to you. Force-close and reopen the app once. If only ChatGPT fails, note the time and check OpenAI’s status page.
- Sign-in loop: Use the same sign-in method associated with your account. Reload the page or reopen the app, and avoid repeatedly submitting credentials. If the account shows a specific restriction or eligibility message, consult OpenAI’s official help guidance rather than trying unrelated routing changes.
- Verification does not arrive: Check that the contact details associated with your account are current and that the message has not been filtered. Do not share verification codes or ask another person to sign in on your behalf.
- Connection drops between networks: Note whether the iPhone moved between Wi-Fi and cellular or changed Wi-Fi networks. Check Shadowrocket’s Home status after the change, then perform one new test. Avoid toggling On Demand or changing several network conditions before you understand the pattern.
Keep troubleshooting reversible. If you change a setting, change only one, record what it was, and repeat the same test. If you cannot restore the original behavior, return to the saved configuration or ask the source of your own configuration for help. Do not send a complete configuration file or subscription URL unless you have removed private credentials and understand what information remains inside it.
Frequently asked questions
Shadowrocket says connected, but ChatGPT will not load. What should I check first?
Open a normal page in Safari, then check OpenAI’s status page. If general browsing works, compare ChatGPT once in your normal Config mode and once in a brief Proxy test, if available. Restore your original routing choice afterward. A connected indicator alone does not establish service availability or account eligibility.
Should I leave Global Routing set to Proxy?
Not just because it helped during a test. Proxy is useful here as a temporary comparison with Config; it changes how traffic is routed. If Config is your normal setup, restore Config after the comparison and investigate the existing rules or configuration source if the results differ.
Can a successful connection test guarantee that my account can use ChatGPT?
No. It only tells you something about that particular network request. Check OpenAI’s current supported-location information, account requirements, and policies. If your account receives an eligibility or access message, follow the official guidance for that message rather than assuming another routing change will resolve it.
Is the official iPhone app available in every App Store storefront?
Do not assume that it is. Search for the official ChatGPT listing in your own App Store storefront and verify its publisher. Availability can change, and Shadowrocket settings do not determine which apps are listed for an Apple Account.
Need help with Shadowrocket setup?
Review the app’s setup notes and use the App Store as the source for Shadowrocket. The app purchase and any separate connection service are different things; this guide does not provide or sell connection details.
